Mercedes Schlapp, the White House strategy director for communications is a difficult task. It is not easy for Mercedes Schlapp to be the adviser to strategic communications at the White House. Schlapp has kept her focus through the entire process, collaborating closely White House policy and political teams as well as the Shops and legislative affairs. In her current role, she has concentrated on various topics, including safety at schools and the use of opioids. As a current employee the director is not in contact with many reporters. The media spotlight was on her in the wake of being announced as an option to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Her focus so far has been on matters such as the safety of schools, opioids, infrastructure and trade. Schlapp doesn't deal with reporters much in her current role. She did draw a flurry of interest in March, when she was mentioned as a contender to replace Hope Hicks as communications director. It hasn't been an easy fight. Schlapp's allies began fighting with Tony Sayegh in the press. Following The Washington Examiner published a negative report on Sayegh Schlapp said she called Sayegh to show a open heart.
